Engadget Logo Engadget Japanese version Sony announces new BRAVIA with Cognitive Processor XR, an image processor that processes like the human brain
Sony Electronics on January 7 (local time) announced the BRAVIA XR series of TVs equipped with a new image processor "Cognitive Processor XR" that reproduces the way humans see and hear.
Even in the previous BRAVIA series, image processing such as color and contrast was performed by AI on a pixel-by-pixel basis, but Cognitive Processor XR takes a different approach. mutual analysis of information and optimization.
When people look at something, they unconsciously focus on a specific part. For example, a person's face or eyes. The Cognitive Processor XR divides the video into multiple zones, and uses Sony's long-cultivated video processing technology to detect what is visible and where to focus. According to that, it is said that more natural image processing will be performed.
Cognitive Processor XR is not only used for video, but also for audio. As the screen size increases, the difference between the image and sound sources (localization) becomes a problem, but the BRAVIA XR has speakers on the left and right sides of the frame, as well as on the upper frame. It is said that the Cognitive Processor XR can analyze the position of the sound and match it accurately with the image. It up-converts any sound to 3D surround for the most realistic picture and sound Sony has ever offered.
In addition, BARVIA CORE, which allows you to watch UHD BD-equivalent video with streaming up to 80Mbps for the BRAVIA XR series, is also provided. Developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), it lets you enjoy classic titles and IMAX Enhanced titles from the latest SPE.
BRAVIA XR has 8K LCD Z9J, 4K OLED A90J and A80J, and 4K LCD X95J and X90J. The price and release date will be announced again in the spring of 2021.
