When the terrorist attacks occurred in September 2001, Dan Versinski (37), living in the southern state of Georgia, was an army officer. I was waiting for my school exams. He expected the military to go to war soon and that it would be over by the time he graduated. I never imagined that I would go to Afghanistan.
In July 2009, he was dispatched to southern Kandahar as a platoon commander with 35 men. He "felt like walking into a hornet's nest" at the former home of the Islamist Taliban.
The main mission is to patrol and obtain local information. Shortly after starting his mission, he was attacked by a homemade explosive device called an improvised explosive device (IED). Eight years had already passed since the start of the war, but the unit had not even been equipped with metal detectors. And then tragedy struck. ...
