A peek at the health of the body and mind with the smart glasses "JINS MEME" of the glasses store
The 2nd generation "JINS MEME" born as a novel glasses-type healthcare device
As expected of JINS! Smart glasses that look the same as ordinary glasses
Speaking of smart glasses, you can watch entertainment content projected on the lenses of the glasses, or display information received on the paired smartphone. There is a product that proposes a usage like a "wearable display". JINS MEME is a smart device that is mainly used for healthcare, as it informs the wearer of the user's "mental and physical condition" in real time.
I used to play an AR-compatible mobile game wearing see-through type smart glasses released by a certain manufacturer. Personally speaking, the content displayed on the display blocks my view, and when I concentrate on the content, I can't pay attention to my surroundings. I think it's an ant to sit down and enjoy VR content at home, but I felt it was difficult to "use while". Also, if you try to secure a certain amount of image quality and drive time, the size of smart glasses tends to be large.
On the other hand, the new JINS MEME has changed its perspective from existing smart glasses and focused on healthcare, and while inheriting the concept from the first model released in 2015, the design has been brushed up, making it no different from glasses. There is something interesting about the finished look.
It is also attractive that the price is 19,800 yen even if you put in a prescription lens, which makes you want to try it for a while. You can choose from 4 types and 2 colors of standard glasses type frames, and 2 types and 2 colors of sunglasses types.
Two important sensors that characterize JINS MEME
JINS MEME's smart technology is concentrated in the "CORE" on the nose pad. The CORE has a 6-axis motion sensor (3-axis acceleration/3-axis gyro) that detects the user's "body movement" and a JINS patented 3-point electrooculography sensor that tracks "eye movement". It incorporates modules necessary for battery and communication.
The 3-point electrooculography sensor detects ``blinking strength and speed'', ``blinking interval'', and ``speed of eyeball movement'' to measure the user's brain function and analyze it with a unique algorithm. The user's biometric information acquired by the sensor is gathered in the mobile application "JINS MEME App" on the smartphone paired with Bluetooth, and visualized in numerical values and graphs. The Android version of the app, which was released in advance from the iOS version, is scheduled to be released in November 2021.
The comfort of wearing glasses is a little special. Adjustable at a store
What about the comfort of wearing glasses before the functions and usability of the app?
This time, I chose the standard glasses type JINS MEME, the frame is "Wellington" type, and the color is black. We are equipped with normal prescription single focus clear lenses according to your eyesight, but you can change to various optional lenses for an additional fee.
When I put it on, it seems that the gap between the eyeball and the lens is wider than the JINS glasses I usually wear, probably because the CORE part at the nose pad is a little thicker. I feel like After using it for a few days, I got used to the way I see it, but I probably should have prioritized stress-free use as smart glasses every day when choosing a frame, rather than design preferences.
After purchase, you can ask the shop staff to fine-tune the nose pads and temples at stores that carry JINS MEME, just like regular glasses. The author visited JINS on the 7th floor of Yodobashi Camera Multimedia Akiba in Akihabara, Tokyo.
It took me a while to get used to "glasses that need to be charged every day". A dedicated clip-type charger is sandwiched between the CORE parts and fully charged in about 3 hours. Although it changes depending on the application and usage environment, it can be used continuously for about 24 hours on the specifications. However, in many cases, the gyro sensor continues sensing, so the standard for continuous use is about 11 hours. If you place the main unit downward, it will enter sleep mode and reduce battery consumption. If you leave JINS MEME in sleep mode for the time you can spend without it, the battery will last longer.
In addition to checking the remaining battery level in the app, a notification will be sent to your smartphone when the remaining battery level is low. In some cases, the JINS MEME itself cannot be used to check, so the battery was dead (sensing was not possible) before we knew it. The feature of JINS MEME is that it can be used as ordinary glasses even if the battery runs out.
I tried to check the balance between body and mind with a smartphone app
From the JINS MEME app, you can see the user's three states: "body", "heart" and "concentration".
First of all, for the condition of the "body", the posture of the head wearing JINS MEME was evaluated in 4 stages. Graph the time period and percentage during the day when you were able to maintain good posture as a score.
When I'm writing a manuscript (typing), I tend to stoop. With JINS MEME, the judgment changes from Good to Bad when the head is tilted forward more than 20 degrees from the vertical posture. It may sound a little harsh, but I think smart glasses are innovative and meaningful as a healthcare device that reminds you to always maintain a good posture.
The state of "heart" is generated from the information that JINS MEME's 3-point electrooculography sensor detects "blinking". The colorful spherical graph expands when the heart is in good condition, and the pulsating rhythm stabilizes. On the contrary, if your heart is disturbed or your mind is down, the sphere will become smaller and your movement will be disturbed. Blink intervals and strength are graphed as evaluations of 'immersion', 'stability', and 'vitality'.
Since it is difficult to be aware of the balance of the mind in everyday life, I felt that the JINS MEME app would be useful. When my heart is out of balance, I try the meditation content included in the "Maintenance" menu of the app. With the sound turned off, it is practical because it can be done quickly in about 1 to 3 minutes in an office or cafe without anyone noticing.
The other main content of the app, "Concentration," aims to objectively grasp one's own concentration based on the information gathered from each sensor of JINS MEME, and lead the heart to a "positive state." I'm doing it.
Focus status is displayed as a purple pie chart that scales and points (numbers). The degree of concentration is divided into "Light concentration" and "ZONE", and the time you concentrated on during the day is displayed while tracking each in chronological order.
In addition, the popular content "Concentrated Measurement" of the first JINS MEME is also included. Choose a BGM that enhances your concentration, and start the timer so that you can focus only on the task in front of you during the set time. If you make it a daily routine, I think it will be easier for you to control your concentration on and off.
Anyway, it has a lot of functions and is worth 500 yen per month
If you use JINS MEME for about a week, you will be able to create a detailed graph report of your physical and mental condition. You can get a sense of your condition just by looking at the graph, but the maintenance content included in the app will show you how to improve the balance of your body and mind, so when you're in a bad state, you'll be motivated to improve. I'm getting excited.
Do you need a function to "share" your condition with someone? It seems that the information collected by JINS MEME is deeply related to privacy, so it is difficult to judge, but I think it would be nice to have an online community where users can teach each other how to use JINS MEME well. .
The app is free for the first year after purchasing JINS MEME, but after the second year, the monthly fee is 500 yen (or 5,000 yen annually). With so many functions, it feels like a bargain, but on the other hand, I was confused by the number of functions at first. Start with the content you need or are interested in, and gradually explore other features.
If you hold regular seminars and workshops at JINS shops, even users who are unfamiliar with smart devices can learn more about JINS MEME. As proposed by JINS, it is important that the value of smart devices that can grasp the balance of the mind is widely known in order to survive the new lifestyles of the future in good health.
