Smart Mold Study Group, Development of Equipment to Detect Mold Damage with Sensors-Efficient Repair and Production Control | Machinery
(2016/11/3 05:00)
The "Smart Mold Study Group", a research organization such as mold vendors aiming to integrate molds and IoT (Internet of Things), has developed a device that detects mold damage and defects in the production process with sensors. It contributes to the efficiency of production control, such as being able to repair the faulty part immediately. Furthermore, we aim to develop a database (DB) that allows mold makers and users to share the history of production and defects. The idea is to create a system with high maintenance efficiency and bring it to market.
In this development, a load sensor was attached to the drilling process using a mold. The press automatically stops when an abnormal load due to damage to the die is measured. Until now, there has been a problem that the detection of damage is delayed and a certain amount of defective products are produced.
In addition, a position sensor is installed in the process of fixing the molded product before pressing. It automatically stops when it detects that foreign matter or two molded products are mixed. Damage to the mold due to contamination by foreign matter can be suppressed.
The domestic mold industry is in a difficult cost situation due to the catch-up of emerging countries. Chairman Hyakutoshi Takahashi (Chairman of Climb NC Day) of the study group emphasizes the improvement of added value of molds, saying, "It is necessary for mold makers and molding makers to work together to create IoT." Next year, it is said that the development of a mechanism for accumulating and sharing mold usage data and the reflection of costs through IoT will be issues.
The "Smart Mold Study Group" was established in January with members from mold-related companies and experts such as Climb NC Day (Minami-ku, Sagamihara City) and Japan Unisys Excellence (Koto-ku, Tokyo). The purpose is to develop technology to increase the added value of molds and strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic mold industry.
